Robert Williams had in his possession an old letter written by Nancy C. Crume to Rachel Taylor Williams, her sister-in-law, dated March 21, 1869 from Pine Town, Cherokee Co., Texas. She said they would be glad to see John (Uncle Jack) and tell Hannah her Uncle Moses says he wishes he could see her and her little babe (Irene Stith). She said tell Mandy (Amanda Wisehart Williams, their sister-in-law) when you see her to write. She sent a lock of hair from each of the four boys pinned to her letter - John Willie, 15, Thomas Anthony, 13, James Richard, 9, and Samuel Gus, 4. (Robert gave this letter to Gladys McAdams, daughter of Samuel Gus Crume.)

m 10-27-1790 Frankie Quinn
Some old letters are in existence wrtten by Richard Vernon to Mr. Anthony Vernon in Scott Co., near Lexington, Ky. Living with Mr. Benjamin Quinn. He addresses "My dear Children" and comforts them for some adversity and hopes they will encourage each other. "I should be very glad to hear your little children prattle. I wonder if little Nancy can call Grand Dady as usual. I don't expect ever to see them in this life." Anthony Vernon took possession of land in Hardin County in 1797 and the letter must have been written before that date when he was staying with his aunt Frances who married Benjamin Quinn. His wife Frankie was a neice of Benjamin Quinn. In Anthony's will he says his wife is helpless and unable to care for herself. Son-in-law John Kennedy and Lucinda were to care for her. He freed two negroes, Lot and Barbara. The will was probated in 1846.

Simeon - Unmarried - Murdered
Aunt Frances Van Meter said her grandmother, Frankie Quinn, became demented after losing two young daughters. They kept a slave with her and one morning, years later, the slave forgot to get her up for breakfast with the family. She had a terrible crying spell and from then on she was in her normal mind again. Both her husband's will and her murdered son's obit mentioned she was afflicted.

VERNON
Obituary of Simeon Vernon, a son of Anthony and Frances Quinn Vernon.
VERNON: At his residence in Hardin county, on the 11th of December, 1876, brother Simeon Vernon departed this life in the 53rd year of his age.
The circumstances leading to his death were of the most horrid character. On the morning of the 5th of December, last, while lying in his bed, between 5 and 6 o'clock, in an upper room, dozing, someone is said to have entered his chamber and saturated his face and whiskers with coal oil and then thrust a burning broom into his face and literally set him on fire. His sister, who was fortunately sleeping in the same room, extinguished the flame; from which he died on the seventh day after the burning.
Bro. Vernon professed faith in Christ, and was baptized into the fellowship of Yougner's Creek Baptist church in the 15th year of his age, but at his death was a member of Middle Creek church, LaRue county. In many particulars his example is worthy of imitation. He was an earnest Baptist and a faithful Christian. He manifested a lively interest in all denominational enterprises; and was willing cheerfully to contribute according to his means to any worthy purpose. He was especially interested in the rising ministry, and in their preparation for the work to which God had called them. It was his pleasure to aid them materially in their labors. It was his custom to subscribe for religious papers and periodicals for young preachers and for others who were not able to supply themselves with such reading. He was kind to the poor and did what he could to relieve their necessities. Not withstanding he suffered the most excruciating pain from the burn, yet he offered an earnest prayer for his assassin. He said his cup was full of joy and that he was ready to be offered.
An aged and afflicted mother, five sisters, a brother and a large circle of friends miss him here. But blessed thought, they sorrow not as those who have no hope. The Lord prepare his surviving friends through grace Divine for a happy meeting over yonder.
Elizabethtown, Ky., Jan. 10, 1877 J.S.G.
************************
John Finley Williams Jr., related to his son Anthony Vernon Williams that the murder of Simeon Vernon was supposed to have been committed by a man namded Metcalf. Vernon was a retired farmer. He and his sister living in Elizabethtown, Metcalf a tenent on his farm. Vernon and his sister had rooms reserved in the farmhouse and they would go to the farm occasionally and stay awhile. Vernon and his tenent had a falling out, it was said, and this was finally the alleged reason for the attack on Vernon, by Metcalf, which resulted in Vernon's horrible death. Metcalf obtained a change of venue, when the trial was called at Elizabethtown, Ky. and was tried at Shepperdsville, Bullitt county and acquitted.
