EVENTS
WRITTEN BY CARLENE (AVERY) LYONS AS SHE REMEMBERED THEM
James Floyd Avery went by the name of Jimmy.
After his first two children were born (Maxie and
Daisy) he took his family and went to Texas. They traveled from the Ida
community to Glasgow, Kentucky in a covered wagon. The trip from Ida to Glasgow
was a two-day trip so they camped on the way at Marrowbone Creek in Cumberland
County. Oscar Guffey and his family were also
traveling with them. When they began to pitch camp, a nearby farm family came by
and offered to take the women and children to their house to spend the night.
James and Oscar stayed with the team and wagon and slept in the wagon. They took
the train from Glasgow to Texas. The place was Trenton, Texas. They didn't spend
much time there because their next child (Carlene) was born in Kentucky in 1910.
The only way for farmers to get fertilize
for their farms was to travel by mule drawn wagons to Cumberland River at Albany
landing. They would usually take three or four wagons at a time and fill them
with fertilize. There was a hill on the road that was called "Red Bud" hill that
was so steep that one pair of mules could not pull the wagon. They would take
two or three pair of mules to pull the wagon up the hill and then go back to the
bottom and hitch mules to another wagon and pull it up. They would do this until
all wagons were moved to the top of red bud hill. I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS
THERE.
Jimmy had bought a small farm in the
seventy-six community and moved his family there. During the winter of 1919 the
flu was so bad that a lot of people died from it. Our neighbors would come by to
check on us but would just come to the yard and ask how we were doing and if we
needed anything. A man by the name of Edgar Walden that lived nearby would bring
firewood and put it on our porch every morning and also check to see how we were
doing. Jimmy eventually moved his family to his brother
Tom's farm in the Ida community and lived there for several years. Jimmy later
bought the Sam Burris farm that joined the Ott Vincent
farm in the Seventy-six community and built a house. Tom and Mary Avery had
lived on this farm several years before in an old log house. Mary's brother,
Jake Sawyers was staying with them and one evening while Mary was cooking supper
he shot himself.
